Gerbils are very territorial and it is best when cleaning out to retain a small amount of bedding so the tank retains at least part of the smell.
Do not separate your gerbils unless they have drawn blood, are chasing each other persistently WITHOUT stopping to pause to do anything else, or if you see them curl into a ball together.
If you have to separate your gerbils they will forget each other very quickly and the only way to safely reintroduce them would be via the splitcage method.
clean the cage out and the food.
yes or no because if a person had fleas and they picked it up it could get fleas
two boy gerbils should not fight, aslong as they knew each other form since they were pups. if not, use the split cage method and you should be fine. if you leave some old bedding in the cage when you clean it out gerbils are less likely to fight. girl gerbils are more dominent so boys are less likely to fight then girls. always keep a pair of gerbils, or they will get depressed. some gerbils do like to live alone, but this is uncommon.
not very big because i have 2 gerbils and my cage is small
gerbils mostly live in pairs or small groups so it depends on the size of the cage and if the gerbils know each other
Once a month is fine. Gerbils are desert creatures so produce very little urine and waste compared to other rodents.
You shouldn't wash gerbils with water. There's a special kind of dust/sand you can buy and keep in a bowl in their cage. They roll around in it and it keeps them clean.
yes, gerbils like to live in groups like a meerkat in australia. if the cage is big enough, if u have a small cage they will get territorial
If you have a healthy gerbil who lives in a clean cage/tank then you will not die if you put their head in your mouth. On the contrary it will be very unsanitary to do so considering they burrow/dig where they poop/urinate and clean themselves also gerbils are prone to mites.
If you introduce them as children using the split-cage method, yes. any other way willl result in murder and fighting.
Yes but u would have to get them at the same age and from the same family of gerbils
No they do not, I have a female and she has lived alone for 2years now, and she is perfectly happy how she is :) Hope this helps. :) Some gerbils can live alone but some can not. Some gerbils live shorter lives without a cage buddy.
