Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to fly in space onboard the Soviet spacecraft Vostok 6 on 16th June 1963.

She had no history as a test pilot unlike her male counterparts and was chosen as a cosmonaut to enable another Soviet space 'first' over their American rivals.

Lieutenant Valentina Tereshkova, born 6 March 1937, was the first woman in space. She was the fifth Russian cosmonaut to go into the Earth's orbit, doing so when her spaceship Vostok VI was launched on 16 June 1963. She completed 49 orbits of the Earth in two days, 22 hours and fifty minutes. Even though there were plans for further flights for women, it was 19 years before the second woman, Svetlana Savitskaya, flew into space.
