Check the fuse, check the bulbs and check the brake light switch, in that order.
either your fuse is blown or the wiring is bad
If the brake lights do not work on Chevy Venture van 2000, try to disconnect the brake switch. Then short the two contacts of the connector to check if the brake lights are now working.
Bad switch, bad relay, short to ground in the circuit.

Sounds as if the wires at the rear of the vehicle are mixed up. Check to see if the brake lights come on when put into reverse gear. That will rather confirm the hosed wiring.
Check the park lamp relay. It is probably next to the fuse.
Blown fuse or bad headlight switch
You might have a bad brake light switch. If you don't have brake lights the switch is bad. When your brake light switch isn't working it wont send a signal to the shift solenoid.
Check the fuse first, then the brake bulbs. When you press the brake, it senses the brake lights and let's you take it out of park. This happened to me - 2 brake lights burnt at the same time with one already gone, and I couldn't get it in gear. I replaced the bulbs, touched the brake pedal and she went into gear no problem.
