The British hung him as a spy. Washington had a whole network of spies working against the British. In 1778 a cavalry officer named Ben Tallmadge established a small group known as the Culper spy ring. They spied from 1778 to 1783 on British troop movements, fortifications, and plans in NY and the area. They are credited with the discovery of Benedict Arnold conspiring to give the British control of West Point.
