There is a plastic piece between the handle and the door panel, I used a screwdriver to make a gap between the handle and this plastic piece. through the gap I was able to see to use a crochet needle to hook and pull the retainer clip loose. Once the retainer clip is loose the handle easily pulls off the spined shaft.
