You will have to do a compression test yourself to know that. A engine that is in good shape should have at least 150 LBS. per cylinder. There can not be more then 20 LBS. difference in any cylinders. It has to have at least 100 LBS. for the cylinder to fire at an Idle.
That engine FRESH / NEW should have 150 LBS. compression per cylinder. If you have more then 20 LBS. difference in any cylinder then it is not in good shape and a good VALVE JOB is probley in the furture.

A new engine would have 150 LBS or more per cylinder. A used engine that runs real good and that has plenty of power should have at least 140 LBS. per cylinder. If there is more then a 15 LB. difference in any cylinder then you will have a rough idle and maybe an engine miss at a idle. That means there is an internal engine problem.

There is no real compression spec for the 2.0 zetec engine. Ford only says that no cylinder should be below 25% or all the cylinders. If it is that cylinder is down. That could be a number of problems such as head gasket or bad rings. Either way. Once you do a compression test yourself I would recommend having a dealership follow it up with a diagnostic.
