Depends on the year. In 2009, the Ford company decided to switch the Ford Escape to a 6 speed transmission, that was a mistake. The vehicle is to heavy for it. Some costumers are going back to the dealerships saying that they are hearing a "hoot" sound. Im only 12, but I have gone through ALOT of car buying. One car that we were considering was the 2009 escape. We didn't get it because we heard that sound, and found out that had to do with the transmission. Some people have had to get a new transmission within 3 months after getting a brand new Ford Escape. So, bottom line, DO NOT GET ONE!!!
You can tell if synchronizers are broken in the transmission on a 2001 ford escape by checking the sychronizers.
