If she just suddenly became that way, then something must have happened in her life that has a great influence on her...(negative)... dont try to make her tell you what is wrong. When the time comes, she will come to you. Try to ignore the mean comments, and be a good friend to her. Maybe ask her why she is saying these things (dont say that she is mean or anything) and if there is anything that bugs her. If she does not respond or answers something rly mean, remind her that you're always there when she needs u. Then, walk away and let her think. Dont be mean to her no matter what. If she shows any signs of depressions, talk to ur parents, her parents, or ur teacher. If she just gets new friends, analyze those friends, to c if they are like her right now (mean). then, you will know what that influence was. If that is the situation, try to talk some sense into her. If the friends r nice and get along with her well, just leave her to be. Your ways have separated.
