Why won't my 1992 Silverado four wheel drive engage?
the actuator on the front end is more than likely the problem. it is electric and it is usually under water or in mud when it is engaged. it is an easy fix. it is located on the front axle tube almost in the center of the front end. it is the only thing on the axle that has wires going to it. oh you will need to remove the skid plate first. then unhook the wires to it and unscrew it out. it has a big nut made on it like a 1 1/4. you made need to put out on it something serious to break it lose. dont be afraid of breaking it you wont. then put your new one in. you can jerry rig it if you wont to. when you take it out slide an old short socket or something like that in the hole and screw it back in. this will engage the front end for good. your 4 wheel drive will still disengage at the transfer case put not at front end like it normally would. doing this you can engage the 4 wheel drive going down the highway and no worries everything in the front end is engaged already. i know this because i had a 1994 that was nothing but a mud buggy. you could engage the 4 wheel drive running 80 down the highway.

Had that happen to my 90 GMC PU. 4WD didn't work and the light on the shifter on the floor didn't light up - just like yours. I don' know what the part is called technically, but the shop mechanic at the dealer called it a donkey dick. Apparently, they go out about every 10 years. It cost about $125 as I recall and it's a 5 minute job to take out the old one and put in the new. It's some kind of electric switch close to the front end that electronically engages and disengages the 4WD. My son-in-law got under the front end and it looked like it was located close to the front axel. He didn't have to jack it up or anything.
