The question isn't specific enough: the basic model and year need to be known, as well as the application. Fuel economy can range from about 8 mpg to 22 mpg. Towing a 5th-wheel or gooseneck trailer is very different fuel economy from unloaded highway driving. The "Duramax" 6.6L engine has been used since about 1999 in the U.S. market, and is in vehicles ranging from 3/4 ton 2500HD, all the way up to 4500 and 5500 units, plus the Hummer Alpha. During 1999-2009, there have been four (?) turbo systems, and at least two transmissions. A 2500/3500HD Sierra or Silverado can range 12-17 mpg city and 16-22 mpg highway when unloaded, depending on how they are driven.

yes
The best way to get better mpg's is with a tuner/programmer. Most out there guarantee better fuel mileage.
Not sure when then was, but fuel economy is always improving. Not sure when then was, but fuel economy is always improving.
Probably the best way to get better fuel mileage would be to get a tuner for it.

Everything is different between 02 and 06, block pistons, computer, turbo, fuel injection psi, etc. See link below.
It depends on what you're asking they are better about. the Duramax is cheaper to upgrade and has better fuel mileage and stock the Duramax triumphs over the Cummins in torque and horse power. but there is a lot of stuff you can do to them both but the Duramax is all around less expensive. and as to which one lasts longer that can vary, the Duramax has proven to be a very reliable engine but the Cummins also has one heck of a reputation. Cummins= 350hp, 650 ftp of torque Duramax=365hp, 660 ftp of torque
