A conjunction is a word used to join words and word groups.
A subordinating conjunction describes the relationship between a dependent clause and an independent clause.

Example uses:

  1. It always rains when we plan a picnic.
  2. You can set the table while I make the coffee.
  3. I have to finish my homework before I can go out.
  4. He doesn't know if he can come.
  5. The air grew chilly as the sun went down.
  6. Since we have a day off, we can have some fun.
  7. We made the cake because it's my father's birthday.
  8. I don't know how you did that.
  9. I'll look for a new apartment as soon as I get a raise.
  10. Unless you have some extra cash, we're vacationing at home.

Note that a subordinating conjunction can start a sentence or come between the clauses.

Since when is it acceptable to begin written sentences with a conjunctive - i.e. -'and''but''because' - this can be seen in all manner of books and magazines lately and even scientific journals-papers?

The use of a co-ordinating conjunction (but, and, for) has been just about acceptable at the start of sentence for a long time, provided that the writer wants to stress the link between the two sentences. However, the use of a subordinating conjunction, such as because or which is unacceptable. About 10-20 some fashionable journalists started using because (in particular) at the beginning of 'stand alone' sentences, presumably in order the reason for something, and now it has become just oh-so-trendy.
