2 Kings 22:20 explains what it means by 'peace' in the line that follows. It is national peace (i.e. during peacetime), and not a peaceful personal death for Josiah:
'Therefore I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.' (2 Kings 22:20, NIV)
King Josiah reigned after the chaotic rules of Manasseh and Amon, under whose leadership the nation of Judah was promised the punishment of catastrophic exile. For God to say that Josiah would be buried 'in peace' and not in a time of disaster must be seen against this background. In contrast to the evils of the coming exile, Josiah's repentance and obedience had seen a 'stay of execution' that meant he would die while peace reigned.
Thus this passage says very little about the kind of death he would die, but rather it describes the condition of the kingdom at the time of his death. Any intended personal peace for Josiah within this promise had to do with being spared from the coming suffering and not having to preside over such horrors, but it makes no promises about his own end.
As promised, Judah did not experience its destruction during the lifetime of Josiah, and although he died in battle, Judah was not at war. His death was the result of his foolish meddling in the wars of others. Thus the words in 2 Kings are accurate.
The relevant scripture is 2 Chronicles 35:20-24 The Egyptian army was on its way to fight alongside the Assyrians against the Babylonians (2Kings 23:29). Josiah went out to fight against Necho king of Egypt to stop him passing through Josiah's land. The battle was at Carchemish near the Euphrates. Although he disguised himself, Josiah was killed in the battle.
After the assassination of his father and the execution of the conspirators, eight-year-old Josiah became king of Judah. (2Kings 21:23, 24, 26)
After the assassination of his father and the execution of the conspirators, eight-year-old Josiah became king of Judah. (2Kings 21:23, 24, 26; 2Ch 33:25)
Joshua was a servant and a successor of Moses. While Moses led Israel out of Egypt, Joshua completed by leading Israel into the promised land in conquest after Moses' death. Joshua was not a prophet, but a spiritual leader of Israel. He simply followed Moses' instructions and finished what he has started as well as continually enforce the law of Moses. Joshua is mentioned many times in the books of Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy as a servant of Moses, and there's a lot more about him in the book of Joshua as the leader of the nation.
Josiah the son of Amon was king of Judah for thirty-one years (641-609 B.C.) He was a man wholoved God, he had the temple repaired, he found a lost scroll of the Law,he had idol shrines in Judah destroyed, he was greatly loved by the people. 2Kings 23:25 There had never been a king like him before, who served the LORD with all his heart, mind, and strength, obeying all the Law of Moses; nor has there been a king like him since.
