I don't know what their called but if you type "1950's hair" in google images it will show you some examples.
After films went wide screen in the 1950's, that created a problem when the films were shown on television which was still square shaped. To avoid having to redo the credits, they letter-boxed them and then went pan and scan after the Director credit.
