Many enlisted in the army and fought in the war. After the war the 13, 14, and 15 th amendments were passed in 1867. These gave exslaves citizenship and rights, but by 1870 federal troops were pulled from the southern states in reconstruction and for the next 100 years Jim Crow laws were put into place resulting in overt discrimination and the loss of civil rights for African Americans.
