The bedding should be changed every week, and the entire cage should be cleaned at least once a month with warm soapy water.

Once you have procured a cage and bedding, you will need toys and a small hideout. Because hedgehogs are nocturnal, you will need a substantial structure that hedgie can sleep in. It needs to be big enough to comfortably house your hedgehog, and for warmth you ay want to add a towel or blanket. Be prepared to replace it every two weeks or so because your pet will love the dickens out of it.

Toys that are acceptable are larger, so your hog can root around them. Often it is fun to buy edible treats so he can have a reward for his efforts.

Toys that make noise are not recommended because of the shy nature of the hedgehog. Remember: he bonds to sound, and you want him to bond with you not a jingle bell.

Finally, you need a food dish and hanging water bottle. You will need to consult your exotics vet about your particular hedgehog diet. There are some ok foods designed for hedgehogs at brand name stores, but some hedgies do better on diets of cat food than "hedgehog food." You should clean these every two weeks or so.

Some final reminders: keep him in a relatively quiet part of the house with little bright light. He will bond with sound, so talk to him often. Keep his cage clean and change his bedding often. If he has a blanket, replace it every couple weeks or so.
