For around town there is not much that can be done to improve gas mileage beyond regular maintenence and driving habits. However, for high speed cruising, 60 mph and above, the 883's respond very well to taller gearing. Unlike offshore bikes designed for high rpm (~4,000+) with relatively low torque, Harleys are designed with high torque for low rpm work, 2900-3100 rpm.
For 1991-2003, 883's if you ride mostly above 70 mph you can use a 30 tooth front pulley. Speeds below 70, or mostly around town want a 29 tooth.
For 2004-Up, 883's for the same as above want a 32 front pulley. And for speeds above 70 mph want also a 66 tooth rear pulley. Pulleys are available on the web, just do a search for "Sportster Front Transmission Pulley".

The purpose of a Harley sportster gas tank is to add capacity on how much this brand of motorcycle can hold. These sportster gas tanks are also to offer a more updated and slick design for those that really love their motorcycle fashions.

First turn off the gas at the petcock. Remove the hose from the petcock and attach your own that is long enough to reach your container.
About 80 miles to the gallon
According to the Owner's Manual, the 883 engine was designed to run on 87 Octane gasoline, which is "economy grade" in the United States.
Harleys don't mix oil with their gas. Harleys have "dry sump" oil systems; instead of there being an oil pan in the engine, a Harley has an oil tank under the seat. The grade you want is 20W50.
