Newfoundland and Labrador is a province of Canada, located at the north-eastern corner of North America. After a time being part of the Portuguese kingdom, in the year 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, following orders and permission from Queen Elizabeth I formally took possession of the island of St John, and Newfoundland became the first British colony in North America. It was until the year 1949 that Newfoundland officially became part of Canada.
About 100 Puritans, led by the Rev. Thomas Hooker, created a settlement on the banks of the Connecticut River in June 1636. Though this became Hartford, Hooker and his followers were not the first Europeans on the scene.

Hartford became the capital of Connecticut Colony in 1662, and then became the state capital of Connecticut after the American Revolution. It was the largest city in Connecticut colony when it was named the capital.
