After the Communits under Mao took over China in 1949, and defeated Chiang Kai Shek, the Nationalist leader who fled to Taiwan, the Communists began to collectivize the farms and institued sweeping changes. Just like in the Soviet Union in the 1920's under Lenin and Stalin, a command economy took hold. A series of 5 year plans were introduced to control the economy and not allowing private ownership and capitalism to challenge their authority. In the 1960's, Mao unleashed the "Cultural Revolution", that decimated Chinese society and the economy. Millions were imprisoned and executed-especially in the rural areas. Mao acted much the same as Stalin had in the 1930's when he purged the Soviet military and executed millions of farmers. Mao did the same thing! He definitely was paranoid and thought there were enemies all around him. The Command Economy came to an end after Mao died in 1976 and Deng Tso Ping became Premier. He travelled to the United States in 1979 and saw firsthand how capitalism flourished compared to China. Today, China is politcally Communist but is free-market economy with the 2nd largest economy in the world surpassing Japan last year! As long as the people don't demonstrate against the authority of the Communist Party, capitalism is allowed to flourish!

How does Vietnam demonstrate that it is a command economy?

=Vietnam can be demonstrated as a command economy because it is a dictatorship and almost all of the decisions are made by the government, leaving no choice for individuals rights. In the command economy the government decides what to produce, distribute and consume. The government also decides the price of the product, how to make the product, how to sell the product, and also who to sell it to. Basically in a command economy there is no freedom.
