While delivering ammunition in an Air America (CIA) Huey, Captain Theodore H. Moore and Flight Mechanic Glenn R. Woods came across a pair of North Vietnamese Air Force An-2 Colt bi-planes in the process of attacking a secret US radar station just across the border in Laos. Woods had equipped himself with a contraband AK-47, and used this to shoot down both of the AN-2s. An air combat first.

The SUPER Cobra (two engines instead of one) is a "post" Vietnam helicopter used by the USMC because it was cheaper to buy than the newe APACHE attack helicopter.
Necessity is the mother of invention. The Viet War accelerated the helicopter. Choppers existed in WWII, and Korea accelerated that machine into US military service (USA svc). After it was in service with the USA, other branches experimented with it. When Vietnam hit the scene, the bird was desperately needed because of the terrain. Starting in about 1962 in South Vietnam the evolution of the helicopter became nearly un-stoppable. The bird went from a strictly observation aircraft to a medical evacuation machine, troop carrying machine, aircraft recovery machine, a gunship, an attack helicopter (the Cobra was America's first designed from the ground up specifically built (purpose built) attack helicopter, and even a VIP and CC aircraft (VIP-Very Important Person & CC=Command & Control).
To support the military aims of the country. -To protect from enemy air attack, to attack the enemy vigorously and to assist the army with air co-operation and support.
It is acceptable to attack military civilian targets. All sides did it in World War II, Vietnam, etc.

Military aircraft are designed to destroy the enemy's military aircraft and (sometimes) their civil aircraft. They also preform bombing tasks as well as a few non-combat tasks. Civil aircraft are mainly transports and crop sprayers that don't do much fighting. Military aircraft are designed to fulfill a multitude of roles that are specified by the Armed forces that will be using these aircraft. These roles include Air attack as well as air support and defence of other military assets. Transport and surveillence are also key roles that military aircraft fulfill. Civil aircraft are designed to perform commercial transport as well as personal use and sports roles. Civil aircraft have no need for stealth or combat survivability the way military Military aircraft do.

An attack helicopter is best for attacking targets and a utility helicopter is best for carrying troops and supplies.
On February 23, 2004, the U.S. Army announced their decision to cancel the Comanche helicopter program in view of the need to provide funds to renovate the existing helicopter fleet of aging attack, utility, and reconnaissance aircraft. Also a factor was the growing popularity in the military of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance purposes
