While Graves disease is potentially fatal if untreated, it doesn't seem to be much of a threat if properly managed.
Graves disease is the result of the immune system attacking the thyroid in such a way that the body produces too much thyroxin. Once that occurs the metabolism can be stimulated to the degree that the body is unable to process sufficient calories to meet the needs of normal operations, so the body starts feeding on it's own muscle mass. Unfortunately, one of the muscles, the heart, doesn't do well once it is reduced beyond a certain point.
When treated, Graves disease is little more than an annoyance.
