The red sun (red ball on a white background) is the Japanese Army flag. The red sun with extending red rays on a white background is the Japanese Naval Flag. Both flags are still used today. They were not replaced.

∙ 15y agoThe "Sun" Flag and the "Rising Sun" Flag, are both still the same, and both are still in use today. The "Rising Sun" Flag (with sun-rays) is normally a NAVAL flag; the "sun" flag (the red ball) is normally the ARMY flag.
