It was invaded and conquered in 530 by Cerdic and his son Cynric. It was invaded again in 685 by Caedwalla of Wessex, the Jutish King of the isle died in action his name was Arwald. 871 came Alfred the Great's navy and again in approx 975 by Ethelred the Unready.

1066 was next when Tosig Godwinson arrived to collect supplies. 1293 it came under full control of Edward I when Countess Isabella De Fortibus sold it to him for six thousand marks.

Henry VIII who developed the Royal Navy included the island in it's fortifications.

Coming right up to modern times, Isle of Wight played an important part in the war when of course there was a Royal Navy station there.
