Yes. The United States has had a number of different political parties during its history.

  • George Washington (1), the first US President, had no party affiliation (there were none).
  • John Adams (2), second US President, was a member of the Federalist Party.
  • Thomas Jefferson (3), James Madison (4), James Monroe (5) and John Quincy Adams (6) were members of the Democratic-Republican Party, which is distinct from later Democratic and Republican Parties.
  • William Henry Harrison (9), who died in office after only one month, belonged to the Whig Party.
  • John Tyler (10), who ran on the Whig Ticket as Harrison's Vice-President, dropped his party affiliation (none) when he became President.
  • Zachary Taylor (12), another short-lived President, was also a member of the Whig Party.
  • Millard Fillmore (13), who succeeded Zachary Taylor, was a Whig, too.
  • Abraham Lincoln (16), who was really a Republican, ran on the National Union Ticket in 1864.

Washington had no party, he opposed political parties. Adams was Federalist party. Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, (JQ) Adams were all Democratic-Republican (different from Democrat or Republican). Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, Fillmore were all Whig party.

There was no Republican Party until Lincoln, who founded the party and ended slavery under the Republican banner. Andrew Johnson was War Union party.

Presidents 18 through 44 have all been Republican or Democrat.
