I would not recommend anything beyond modified.
If it was made to shoot steel shot and has interchangeable chokes.
Depends on the choke. MOST chokes, including full choke, can safely fire slugs. Some makers of adjustable chokes recommend that slugs NOT be fired thru their chokes. A very few chokes, such as the Extra Full chokes used on some turkey guns should not be used for slugs.
No.
Yes. Standard chokes should be OK. Extra full chokes, on modern turkey guns, no.
Yes
Yes, you may shoot slugs or buckshot through a shotgun fitted with the C-Lect Choke system. This is from the tag that Mossberg attaches to their shotguns fitted with C-Lect Chokes.
No. It is unsafe to shoot slugs in a shotgun with a full choke. A full choke shotgun may not allow the slug to pass through and could injure the gun and the shooter. Slugs will work fine in ANY shotgun that has a cylinder, improved cylinder, or modified cylinder choke. If you happen to have a shotgun with crew in chokes, it will be easy to switch chokes. Most slugs that people use are the foster- type slugs. These slugs feature a hollow base and are made of softer lead and are found at most stores. They are made by Remington, Winchester, and Federal. These slugs are more forgiving as they can sometimes squeeze through a tighter choke. Slugs like those from Brenneke and Dixie slugs are made of harden lead and are less forgiving. These slugs are safest used in shotguns that have cylinder or improved cylinder chokes.
You will need to shoot both chokes with as many different kinds of ammuntion as you can afford at the range you intend to shoot. Your shotgun will show a preference for at least one load.
Yes. Hollow base deer slugs are made slightly undersized, and will safety pass thru most chokes. A few makers of variable chokes specifically warn NOT to use slugs with their chokes installed. It may not be safe to fire a slug thru an Extra Full choke (normally only found on Turkey guns). Modified should be fine.
First, check your owner's manual. Some makers may recommend that slugs NOT be fired (usually with makers of variable choke guns) In theory, you can use any choke as open as full (Extra full used by turkey hunters, not good with chokes). In practice, MOST shotguns will shoot slugs most accurately with a Modified choke, but you will need to test fire YOUR gun, and see what it likes.
Improved-cylinder, or skeet barrel. "Modified or full-choke barrels (in any make gun) simply will not shoot slugs or buckshot as well as the more open chokes." --Edward A. Matunas; "Deer Hunter's Guide to Guns, Ammo and Equipment", 1983
yes you can with steel chokes .
