- The earth's climate is continually changing. Over millions of years we have moved gradually from one Ice Age to another. These changes take hundreds of thousands of years.
- The present climate change has only been happening for 250 years. It is happening far faster than any change before! It is not a natural cycle, but is being caused by human activity.
- We have affected and modified our climate in two major ways
- By deforestation. The great forests no longer remove Carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere.
- By burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, which releases carbon dioxide.
- The results of this climate change are happening already:
- Record heat waves
- Famines across Africa
- Ice caps and glaciers melting
- Sea levels rising
- Storms becoming more dangerous and powerful
- Flooding of low-lying cities and coastal croplands
