People have most definitely not adjusted to their surroundings. If they had the would still be many rainfalls, and jungles and not many animals would be endangered as they are now. I also don't believe they have tried to modify it only that they keep using Natural Resources from the environment causing it to be modified and still is since humans don't seem to stop.
