Scientific studies into the mitochondrial DNA of native American populations is still ongoing and is a very long and complex process.
Studies have so far pointed to 95% of all the native DNA being linked to just 6 ancestral women who probably lived in Beringia - the area of land between the USA and Asia which no longer exists. This evidence is around 20,000 years old; going back further is much more difficult due to the ancestral DNA in Asia being very complex and there are many more obstacles in collecting DNA samples in places like China.
It will be very interesting to follow developments in the future.
