I think that it was because Henry VIII wanted a son and Catherine of Aragon could not , according to historians, give birth to any more children. He set up the Church of England to divorce Catherine because the pope would not allow it. Anne Boleyn was the next girl in waiting but Henry was not aware that she was already pregnant. Henry was forced to divorce Catherine for Anne would not approve of having sexual intercourse with a married man.

Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were the only wives Henry VIII had beheaded. Henry's first marriage (with Catherine of Aragon) was annulled, his second was with Anne Boleyn, his third wife (Jane Seymour) died of childbed fever, his fourth (Anne of Cleves) was divorced, Catherine Howard was his fifth wife and his final wife (Catherine Parr) survived him to marry again.
