Hiram S. Thomas was a rich businessman who was famous for buying a home in a fancy wealthy area in New York. This was a big deal because he was black and it was the 1890s. He probably would have been more famous if he actually moved in, but, apparently, the racist uproar caused him to sell a couple months later.
