Sailor Calvin L. Graham (April 3, 1930-November 6, 1992)was the youngest Navy Veteran of WWII, enlisting at the age of 12. It wasn't until he was injured at the Battle of Guadalcanal during an attack on his ship, the USS South Dakota, that his mother then revealed his true age.
Although initially awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, after recovering, he spent 3 months in the brig for lying about his age (fraudulent enlistment) and was subsequently dishonorably discharged and stripped of his medals. At 17, he joined the Marines, but his service was cut short after 3 years when he broke his back in a fall to a pier.
Though technically a Veteran from his Marine service, his former dishonorable discharge prevented him from collecting any VA benefits. He worked until 1978 to restore his benefits and clear his record, and eventually all his medals (except Purple Heart) and benefits were restored, as well as an upgrade to an honorable discharge. In 1988, he was awarded his disability benefits and back pay, and his Purple Heart was also finally reinstated 2 years after he passed away in 1992.
