When speaking of military recruitment, its history has been for the most part overshadowed by volunteer soldiers or mercenary soldiers. At various times a "patriotic" duty induced men, for the most part, to join the armies of their rulers or even elected rulers. At various points in history the use of conscription has filled the ranks of armies. The US, for example had a "draft system" in place following World War Two. In the early 1970's the draft in the US was abolished. The US Military relies on volunteers. This is different from nation to nation. Some remain with conscription others do not.
