DNS or Domain Name Server is what makes the widespread use of the internet possible. You see, when you type a URL into your web browser such as www.Google.com or www.YouTube.com or even www.yahoo.com, you computer does not know what to do with this information. Networking devices such as routers and switches work with IP addresses. When you type a website into your web browser your computer basically sends a signal to your internet service provider's domain name server. This signal basically says to match the website you typed in with an IP address. The request for the website you then requested is sent to the appropriate IP address.
Domain Name Servers make it possible to easily remember multiple websites. You have to admit it's much easier to remember: yahoo.com, google.com, bing.com, ebay.com, facebook.com, howstuffworks.com instead of their IP address equivalents of: 98.138.253.109, 74.125.225.104, 66.152.109.30, 66.135.205.13, 173.252.100.16, and finally 107.21.49.125. Go ahead try it for yourself, copy and past one of those IP addresses into you web browsers address bar instead of the usual www.yahoo.com. It will bring you to the same exact websites but it's much easier to remember names instead of numbers. It's much more easier to remember a URL than an IP address, however since networking devices work with IP addresses, DNS servers are needed to solve this problem.
