An eclipse of the sun is called a Solar Eclipse and this happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth.

Where the shadow (umbra) of the Moon touches the surface of the Earth there is a total eclipse. In a stationary location on Earth a total eclipse can last as much as 7 minutes (extremely rare). Close to the area where totality can be experienced there is a much larger area where only part of the Sun is obscured by the Moon (partial eclipse). Unless you are very keen a partial eclipse of less than 90% might go unnoticed (the Sun is SO bright that even 10% is enough to appear as day).

The area of totality moves as the shadow of the Moon moves across the Earth's surface at great speed.

WARNINGNever, ever, look directly at the Sun. You will permanently damage your eyes. During totality is is safe to look towards the Moon/Sun and you will see the fantastic display of the Sun's corona but as soon as the smallest part of the photosphere (the luminous surface of the Sun itself) appears you must protect your eyes (sunglasses are not good enough - you need special lenses made exactly for that purpose!)

I think this question should be "What is an annular eclipse?"

An annular eclipse is a well-known type of solar eclipse where a small rim of the sun is visible all the way around the occluding moon. The name of the eclipse comes from the meaning of the Latin word annulus, meaning ring (or possibly circular opening).

This type of eclipse happens when the moon is at or near its farthest orbital distance from the Earth during the moments of the eclipse.

There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. Sometimes there are more, or fewer; for example, in 2011, there will be no solar eclipses at all. The maximum possible number is 5 per year, which happens very infrequently.

When the Moon is exactly between the Sun and the Earth a small portion of the Moon's shadow falls on the surface of the Earth and that place experiences a total solar eclipse (other areas nearby will experience partial solar eclipse).

When the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon there will be a lunar eclipse. If the shadow completly engulfs the Moon the eclipse is said to be total.
