The proper way, for instance when showing, as follows is a proper dismount for Western.

1. Remove the right foot from its stirrup.

2. Keeping the left hand on the reins, lean and put your weight onto your right hand, which will be placed on the very front of the seat in front of the pommel.

3. Swing your right leg high over the horses hidquarters leaving your left foot in the stirrup, but your weight should be over the right hand which should be on the pommel.

4. Remove your left foot from the stirrup.

5. Push away from the horse, releasing the right rein, but holding onto the left.

6. You should land balanced about 12-18" from your horse.

As follows is the proper dismount for English.

1. Remove the both feet from the stirrups.

2. Keeping the left hand on the reins, lean and put your weight onto your right hand, which will be placed on the pommel.

3. Swing your right leg high over the horses hidquarters leaving your weight over your hands, which should both be withers (Left) and pommel (right).

4. Push away from the horse, allowing the reins to slip through your left hand, but not letting go or pulling on your horse's mouth

5. You should land balanced about 12-18" from your horse.

6. Run your left stirrup up and step forward and take the reins over the horse's head.

7. Change sides, run up the right stirrup, and return to your horse's left side.
