They fought for slavery in different ways. Many abolitionists wrote in newspapers and books to express how they felt about slavery. William Lloyd Garrison, one of the most vocal abolitionists, began a newspaper called the Liberator. In the Liberator, Garrison wrote about immediate abolition of slavery without compensation. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. This novel was one of the most influential pieces of literature ever written. It talked about how slaves were treated. After reading it, many Northerners wanted to abolish slavery.
Other abolitionists fought for slavery more physically. Nat Turner led a slave rebellion with 70 or more blacks. They went from house to house freeing slaves and killing their masters. He gave the order to kill all of the white people they saw. John Brown also led a rebellion. He saw violence as the only effective method to end slavery. His rebellion was not very successful. He hoped that thousands of slaves would revolt and rally to him, but nothing happened. The local militia came and took him to trial where it was decided that he would be hung.
