How accurate were fighter planes?

On their own, not accurate at all. It was the pilots who controlled the 'planes which made them accurate. Some fighters were more stable gun platforms, others were more maneuverable. A good pilot learns how to get the most from his aircraft. A Spitfire may be able to turn tighter than a FW190 but if the FW can climb faster, it can operate in a vertical, rather than a horizontal, plane.

Some pilots were regularly able to shoot down an enemy 'plane using just a few rounds of ammunition while others flying the same type of aircraft would use all theirs and not hit anything.
