The land was occupied by the Magyars in 895, called the Conquest. They settled down in the Carpathian Basin and formed a state with the leadership of Stephen I (later Saint Stephen, in Hungarian Szent István).
The Magyars gradually adjusted themselves to the people of Europe, which was a hard thing to do as previously the Magyars lead a half-nomadic way of life and were pagans. The first steps towards consolidation were made by Stephen's father, Géza (who was the last Magyar prince) who called in feudal knights and missionaries from the west to help his people to change to Christianity. Stephen I (997-1038) was crowned with a crown received from the Pope in 1000, and he founded the Hungarian state.
