To put it simply, religions were usually developed by people who say that they spoke toGod and are interpreting it. For example, Muslims believeMuhammad spoke to God and then wrote his words in a book called the Koran. Christians and the Jewish believe that God spoke to many people, and they all wrote a separate book of their experiences that went into a book called The Bible. The Jewish only believe in the Old Testament, while Christians believe in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Other religions like the ancient Egyptians' believed in many gods as a reason why certain things happen. Most religions spread by missionaries who preach their religion to others and slowly gather followers. Also centuries ago, the spread of religion was somewhat based on the governments of many eastern countries' influence.
Religions start for a variety of reasons. If people are not satisfied with the religion that they have, they may try to create a better one. Some people believe (rightly or wrongly) that they have received some kind of divine revelation which they are obligated to convey to their fellow human beings. Some people see an opportunity for profit.

Ethnic religions tend to be tied closely to the cultural and historical context of a specific group of people, making them less likely to spread widely to other populations. Additionally, the emphasis on preserving tradition and specific cultural practices can create barriers to widespread adoption by individuals from different backgrounds.
