Australia was caught up in the war, while sending proceeds over to Europe, most organisations were involved in the war effort and so some, rights and freedom groups were shut down as a result. The big picture was seen more important than minor concerns being faced by rights and freedom groups.
The Espionge and sedition acts were made to keep Americans from having their freedom of speech. Pretty much the government was in control and there was no more being called an "American" because being an American meant that you would have civil liberties.
