The American crocodile is listed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN. In the U.S., it has never been very common in the Florida mangrove swamps where it resides with an estimated population there of 500 or less. The species is found also in Cuba and Central America.
At one time, the American alligator was hunted for its skins and meat. Ruthless hunters destroyed nearly two thirds of the country's alligators before they were proctected. Today, there are nearly three million alligators in the United States, from coastal North Carolina to Texas. Florida and Louisiana have over one million each. North Carolina has the smallest population, at around 3500.
The American Crocodile is only really becoming extinct in the U.S. and it is because of loss to their natural habitat more than anything else.
The American crocodile is listed as vulnerable, not endangered by the IUCN. The species is common in Central and South America, but the US population is less than 2000.
