Massachusetts is a state; it was one of the original 13 colonies that became part of the newly established United States. Boston was (and is) the capital of Massachusetts. It is where the State House and City Hall (important centers of the government) are located. Boston did not officially become a city till 1822, but it was always influential, even in the early days of Massachusetts.
