An isotope is an element that has lost or gained neutrons. Losing or gaining neutrons does not effect the overall charge, but it does affect the elements stability.

when 2 element form an ionic bond, which is where the electrons are taken from one element and given to another. when this bond is broken, the electrons don't return to their original element, so the result would positive or negative ions, the positive being with less electrons than protons and the negative being with more electrons. isotopes occur when an atom of an element has less or more neutrons than protons. this doesn't effect the charge of the atom but it makes the nucleus unstable and can cause radiation.
