Wild black panthers in Latin America are black jaguars (Panthera onca)

in Asia and Africa black leopards (Panthera pardus), and in North America may be black jaguars or possibly black cougars Black panthers have sometimes been regarded as forming different species from their normally-colored relatives

The name "panther" is often limited to the black variants of the species, but is also used to refer to those which are normally-colored for the species (tawny or spotted), or to white color variants: white panthers.

Panther is a generic term and may be any of the following species:

a lion - panthera leo

a tiger - panthera tigris

a leopard - panthera pardus

a jaguar - panthera onca

a snow leopard - panthera uncia.

The cougar (Puma concolor) is not considered a panther, although sometimes erroneously called a panther. The other species are all genetically similar so are classified together. The cougar is genetically different and more closely related to the cheetah.

Do black panthers only breed with other black panthers?

No. A black panther is the melanistic (black) "version" of a jaguar or leopard. A black jaguar will mate with a normally colored jaguar just as a black leopard will mate with a normally colored leopard.

Why is the black panther becoming extinct?

"Black panthers" are merely melanistic (black) specimens of the leopard (Panthera Pardus) or the jaguar (Panthera Onca). There is no such thing as a "black panther" species, and, as neither the leopard or jaguar is endangered at the moment, neither are the black members of those species. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Black panthers are more of a genus than of a species. So you've gotten that part right, but don't say that black panthers don't exist, because they ARE real.

Are cougars and panthers the same animal?

Yes, Leopards and BLACK panthers are the same thing black panthers are just from a diffrent habitat than leopards if you ever get near a leopard (panthera de pardus) or black panther at the zoo or something if you look at the coat of the black panther they have the rossettes that the regular leopards have the only difference is that the black panthers are dark. Panthers are leopards, and cougars, and jaguars! Panther is a generic term that describes any of these three species. And black cubs can be found in the same litter with spotted cubs. More black leopards come from Asia than Africa.

What is done to save the black panthers?

Can black panthers be found in the US?

The Eastern Cougar lives in Canada. No panthers. Cougar is another name for the puma or mountain lion, found throughout the New World (North and South America). Panther, originally, applied to the African and Asian leopard. Later it was mostly used for the melanistic form of the leopard ('black panther'). The settlers in America attached 'panther' to the cougar and it is still commonly called that, especially for the 'Florida panther' (ie, the subspecies of cougar found in Florida)
