The Eastern Cougar lives in Canada. No panthers. Cougar is another name for the puma or mountain lion, found throughout the New World (North and South America). Panther, originally, applied to the African and Asian leopard. Later it was mostly used for the melanistic form of the leopard ('Black Panther'). The settlers in America attached 'panther' to the cougar and it is still commonly called that, especially for the 'Florida panther' (ie, the subspecies of cougar found in Florida)

∙ 7y agoBlack panthers are not a single species. They may be a melanistic (black) leopard from Africa or Asia or they may be a melanistic jaguar from North or South America. As the jaguar has all but been extirpated from the United States, it is doubtful you could find a melanistic specimen in that country. They are most commonly found in the rainforests of the Amazon in South America.

∙ 7y agoPanthers include jaguars, lions, tigers, leopards and snow leopards. None of these is a native of Canada. The only large cat living in Canada is the cougar which is not classified as a panther.
