There are two aspects that play a major role in a cats predation. One is learning. The same way you and I learned to walk to two legs (from our parents) the cat learns form their mother of other older cats around her how to hunt. However if you mean domestic cats, this is where the second one comes into play, instinct. Just like a fish is born knowing how to swim, a cat's instinct is to hunt. They have claws and sharp teeth, the only thing left is to use them to his or her advantage.
