Dogs are trained by discipline and reward. When your teaching your dog say the command move the dogs body into the position you want then repeat the question, remember to always after each command give the dog a treat. continue with that then after a certain period of time the dog will understand and then do the command. be generous with the treats.
Younger is best. But every time they use the bathroom in the house rub there nose in it and pop them on the butt and say no and put them outside

The best way to train dogs are to train them when they are younger, and use a lot of treats and lots of encouragement/praising. Old dogs can learn new tricks but it is a lot easier to teach them when they are younger.

To start off training your dog...

- Gather some treats, give your dog a few of them to know that you are going to give him/her some when they perform a command. Have your dog on a leash, using a metal choke collar.

Sit..

Have a treat in your left hand, leash in your right.

First- Face your dog and say the sit command in a powerful tone, at the same time you say "sit", place one hand on the dogs back just above the tail and one hand on the dogs chin. Push down on the dogs but and pull up the chin making it sit. When the dog sits give them a treat and praise them (not in a baby tone though). Repeat this until the dog can sit on its own. And give the leash a little tug if the dog doesn't listen.

Lay Down- Your dog needs to know sit before they learn to lie down.

First- Have your dog sit. Then Place one hand on the dog's back between the shoulder blades. While pushing down on their shoulders say the command and push them down to a lie down position. There are other methods of doing this.

Come- Have a treat and your dog on the leash.

First- face your dog. then start slowly back pedaling and calling your dog to come. If your dog doesn't budge then give the leash a little tug. When your dog starts following you, praise them and keep back pedaling and calling them to come. Once your dog has mastered that then take him/her off the leash and do that exercise without the leash.

Remember to always praise your dog when they have completed a command. Never scold them if they are unsuccessful with a command simply say no and try again. Training should be completed on a daily or weekly basis to ensure that the dog is adequately learning.

There are a lot of resources out there to learn about training dogs- including books, seminars etc. I have a passion for working with dogs and I wanted to make it my career, so I attendance an academy for professional dog trainers. It's honestly the best thing I've done-- I learned so much at the school. There are also some online courses that you can take to further your knowledge on dogs and dog behavior. The school I attended is offering such a program... www.dogschoolonline.com

The best way to train dogs is with lots of treats. Dogs love food and mine will do anything for a tiny bite of food. If you want to train them sit just push down on their butt, saying sit, and once they are sitting give them a treat. For things like shake just grab their paw, saying shake at the same time and give them a treat. It only takes labs and retrievers about three days to be taught a trick.

Never hit your dog with a stick when training it. Put a leash on your dog in till it won't run off. teach your dog how to do its duds outside and not inside.
People write whole books on the topic and only touch the surface. If you want to learn to train a dog, enroll in a good basic obedience class with your dog. A good class will teach you some basic training theory and help you to apply it in real-world situations.

While there are things to be learned from books, there are two critical skills to Dog Training that you cannot learn from books and can only learn at the side of a skilled trainer. Those two things are: reading the dog's reactions and intentions and timing reinforcement and corrections.
The easiest was to explain it would be constant repetition, positive reinforcement, and consistency.
Reward like crazy, all of the acceptable behaviors like going "potty" outside, not barking at guests, not jumping on people, etc. Use treats (small ones) and praise the dog and give attention when the behavior is 'good'.
Ignore and scold - do not hit- when the behavior is bad. Stick to the pattern and let the dog out regularly for 'breaks' so that YOU prevent accidents while the pups bladder grows to accommodate holding it for less frequent, more regular trips out.
Also, it's important to give the dog plenty of toys to try out and praise the dog when it chooses it's toys over, say, your shoes. Prevent your belongings from sitting within reach of the pup until you can focus some time on giving the pup the choice of your possessions or it's own toys and reward, reward, reward the correct choice.
It's a time commitment, but if done early on, it will make dog ownership a very gratifying experience.

Training dogs generally employs the Pavlovian Classical Conditioning method, were a innate reinforcement (unconditioned stimulus or US) is paired with a command or trick (conditioned stimulus or CS). As the dog learns to associate the CS with the US, the dog will continue to perform/do the CS, even without the subsequent presence of the US (though presence does provide reinforcement).

For example, if you wish a dog to "roll over", you would tell the dog to "roll over", and then give him a treat if he does so. The dog will learn to associate the sound of "roll over" to mean a treat, and will subsequently roll over whenever commanded as he has learned to do so in order to receive his reward. However, if you repetitively command the dog to "roll over", but then never provide any positive reinforcement, it is possible that the conditioning will become extinct and the dog will "forget" how to roll over.
