In technical terms, they are the same species as wolves, because most breeds descended from wolves. Dogs are a different subspecies to wolves. So in other words, they are incredibly similar in a genetic sense, so much so that they could breed and have healthy pups. Also, they look very similar, they are both mammals, their offspring are called pups, the females are called b*tches (I had to sensor it so the answer wouldn't get flagged), the males are called dogs. The few differences I can think of are that wolves are wild, and therefore live in different habitats, and dogs tend to bark whereas wolves don't.
