If just a few trees are selectively cut down, the forest can renew itself with new growth after some years. But if great swathes of trees are cut (clear-felling), then it is very difficult. Planting young trees, though a good thing to do, won't replace the mature trees for decades.

If forests are cut down to plant some other crops, like palm oil, then the forests will never renew.
