As the name sounds a hybrid is a mix of two different types of vehicles, your standard gas engine and the electric car. So in a sense you have an small gasoline motor and another electric motor that run the transmission. The electric motor runs off of battery storage, there are more batteries than just the one in standard gasoline vehicles. In order to keep these batteries charged there is contraption ( the technical name escapes me ) that is attached to the braking system that converts the stopping motion of the car to energy for the batteries. The electric motor will run the vehicle in slow speed scenarios and the gasoline motor will run in the higher speed scenarios.
The answer depends on what hybrids you mean.
