There are some microbes which can degrade harmfull or toxic compounds present in our environment and this phenomena is called bio or microbial remedation.

Many microorganism have capability to degrade substances like haevy metal e.g. As, Cr, Zn etc. and also hydrocarbons like pesticides, herbicides, fungicides etc.

They can degrade animal and plant waste products by the mechanism of putrifing

By this they help in ecological cycle of biomass.

Our community uses them to sometimes eat away bad bacteria in an invornment

for example, they break down poisons in an environment like oil (Bioremediation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioremediation)
